With more than a quarter century of experience, AKGÜN, who drives innovation in the global marketplace by encouraging the development of groundbreaking products, shared its overseas know-how at the Medical and Biological Engineering Conference.

Being the pioneer of the Telemedicine Project initiated by the Ministery of Health and the first company to establish Computer Aided Diagnosis systems in Turkey, AKGÜN’s presentation has received a great interest in the conference.

The 6th European Conference of the International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (MBEC 2014) was held in Dubrovnik, Croatia, from 7th to 11th September 2014. Bringing together the doctors and engineers, the conference made the attendances to argue, discuss and follow the most up-to-date R & D activities. The first congress of this series was held in Vienna in 1999 with a major breakthrough with more than 1000 scientific papers. The following congresses (Vienna 2002, Prague 2005, Belgium 2008 and 2011 Budapest) showed that biomedical engineers and doctors from all over the world are willing to meet in Europe. The general theme of MBEC 2014 was “Towards new horizons in biomedical engineering”. The conference program consisted of plenary/keynote lectures, symposia, workshops, invited sessions, oral and poster sessions, and exhibitions. Key topics of the conference are:

  • Biomedical Signal Processing
  • Biomedical Imaging And Image Processing
  • Bio-Micro/Nano Technologies
  • Biomaterials
  • Biomechanıcs, Robotics and Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Cardiovascular, Respiratory and Endocrine Systems Engineering
  • Neural And Rehabilitation Engineering
  • Molecular, Cellular and Tissue Engineering
  • Bioinformatics and Computational Biology
  • Health Informatics, E-Health and Telemedicine

The paper named “Lung Nodule Detection in X-Ray Images: A New Feature Set”, which is related with the Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) product of Akgün, the first software company in Turkey to create a CAD System in Lung X-Ray Images, is presented by Burçin Buket OĞUL. According to the GLOBOCAN 2012 statistics while the first three most common cancer types are lung, breast and colon, the highest fatality rates are seen in lung, liver and stomach. In order to reduce these rates by marking the anomalies seen in lung x-ray images and by decreasing wrong diagnosis and increasing high detection of cancer, our TUBITAK-funded CAD project was found as an attention grabbing product at the conference, which hosted more than 300 academic staff and sector representatives.

With more than a quarter century of experience, AKGÜN, who drives innovation in the global marketplace by encouraging the development of groundbreaking products, attempts to increase its innovation capacity by continuously monitoring both the global and domestic market needs. The reasons behind the global success of our company is not only following the global trends but also developing and serving the products that make a difference at the same or near time by the developed countries.
